Title: The Golden God Apollo
Author: Gates, Doris
Call Number: 292.211 G259G
Subjects: Apollo (Greek Deity)
Number of Pages: 110
ISBN: 0670344125
Book Description:
Of all the Olympians, Apollo, god of the sun, was the best loved, because he brought light and warmth to the world each day. He was also the protector of clocks and of voyagers and the deity of medicine and music. He was wonderfully strong, blindingly beautiful and godly- and yet he was capable of making all-too-human mistakes. Mistakes like having all his cattle stolen by a newborn baby. Or falling in love with a girl who found him so repulsive she turned into a tree to escape his advances. Or allowing his son to drive his fiery chariot on its perilous course through the sky, a blunder which cost the boy his life.
Like all the gods and goddesses, Apollo could be cruel When his sister Artemis fell in love with the hunter Orion, Apollo, jealous, devised a scheme whereby his sister unwittingly killed the man she loved. But he could also be kind and compassionate-on learning of the death of King Admetus’s wife, Alcestis, he invited the Three Fates to dinner, plied them with wine, and cajoled them into raising Alcestis from the dead.
The author has succeeded in weaving the many stories centering around an important god into a vivid and exciting tapestry that she hopes will give the often fragmented tales a more meaningful continuity. By doing so, she brings to them a freshness, a sense of drama and vigor that will make them memorable to young readers.
My Read:
First of all, my intention from the beginning of reading this book was to exercise my speaking skill in the language of English. The more books I could read aloud the better my language would become. It’s a kind of reading habit I would like to acquire and maintain on a daily basis. This was not the first book that has served me the purpose. Yet it’s a book big enough for me to write a book review.
Apollo, god of the sun, was a subject I came across in high school in the sophomore year in the English class. The story introduced in the textbook was about Apollo and his riding his chariot across the sky. And, without surprise, I read the similar episode in this borrowed library book. It’s an interesting experience for, back then, reading anything in English was a hassle and headache to me; the subject was pretty foreign and mentioning of the subject reminded me of the countless of quizzes and exams I had to take on a daily basis. And don’t forget the deprivation of sleep! Now I read with pleasure and it’s become a choice and a habit I enjoy, also, on a daily basis.
Stories of the Greek myths project people’s aspiration and desire; they provide certain sense of hope and dreams allowing people to go beyond reality and imagine that one day, if only, what if…things people would be delighted to own, hold, exercise, or prevent. The gods and goddesses in myths and legends usually would behave or act like human beings; there are jealousy, revenge, greed, hatred and many negative things those gods would have to overcome and struggle with. Just like humans.
It’s a good read not only because it helps me improve my speaking skills it also reminds me of one thing: no matter who you are no one is perfect.

Lydia's One Word for This Year-Perseverance

Lydia's One Word:
I chose the word “perseverance” for this year. I usually make a few resolutions at the beginning of the year. But I’ve never kept the resolutions until the end of the year. Sometimes I keep it for a few days as a proverb, “a resolution good for only three days”. I always make a lot of excuses for my laziness. That’s why I chose the word “perseverance”. I want to overcome my laziness this year. I think perseverance is the first essential quality to achieve my goal.
I think the members of WOW reading club are helping me to persevere in my efforts, so I can reach my goal. We meet once a week and all of the members are encouraging me to read a book, to practice English and to think about my future. I’m lucky to meet the book club members, Ruby, Mei-Wan, Patti and Sherri.
In Korea, we have a proverb, “You could find your teacher if you gather three people”. Now all of the reading club members are my teachers. At first, I met Ruby last year in ESL class. She was very nice and gave me useful information to adapt the new life in America. She really enjoys helping others. Next, I was impressed when I met Mei-Wan in a Chinese restaurant. She spoke English fluently (That’s my dream since I came to America^^) and she was enthusiastic in influencing others. And I met Patti and Sherri at the reading club. They not only help with my poor English but also help understanding culture, history and community of America. They get me to think about my future after I finish raising my children. They spend their time developing themselves and helping others.

What can I do for my community in the future? I shall persevere in my efforts…

Title: Ham Bones
Author: Carolyn Haines
published year: 2007
Patti's Read:
This book is one of a series of ‘cozy” mysteries with a heroine named Sarah Booth Delaney, who lives on an old Mississippi plantation in a big old inherited home with Jitty, a black ghost who has hung around for 200 hundred years, talks to Sarah, varies her looks, and can be seen by no one else.

Sarah now has the old plantation farmed and is part of a private investigator business with her best friend, Tinkie.  Sarah has returned from New York where she tried to enter the world of stage acting but with little success.

In this episode of Sarah’s adventures, a touring production of the play, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, is opening in her home town with a mean star named Renata Trovaioli, who starred in a New York play where Sarah was her understudy.  Also arriving in town is Graf an actor who Sarah had a failed romance with when she was in New York.

Renata turns up dead of poisoning.  Sarah is the number one suspect.  She goes through a lot of grief before the surprise ending establishes that Renata committed suicide because of suffering from a horrible disease that was progressive and set up Sarah to take a fall of murder.

I enjoyed the story and am reading more of this series..

Title: “CSI: The Case of the Missing Moola”, Published 2012 by Simon and Schuster

 Patti's Read:
Ben, Han, and Corey are three close friends in the seventh grade.  This story tells of the adventure at their school which led to them to use their extracurricular three person Forensic Science Club skills to solve the missing class trip money at school.
The seventh graders were having a fund raiser to provide their class share of monies to pay for a class trip to Washington D.C.  Mrs. Ramirez collected all the money of those students present on a certain day.
The money box was opened later so that all the student money envelopes could be recounted and turned into the office.  The money box was found to be $100. short.
As the days go on, and the three detectives investigate, various people are suspected and cleared.  Finally the three come across Greg, a student who admits to taking the money to pay for a Quark Pad that he claimed was only $100., from a Nick and Alex.
The student detectives know that the pads cost a lot more than that and set up a “sting” with the principal and police alerted so that the crooks could be caught.  They are successful and find that Nick and Alex have been stealing the pads and selling them cheap. The two are arrested.
Greg admits he took the money and the school is letting him pay it off in installments.

The Quark Pad Company was so happy the thieves were caught that they made a generous cash contribution to the school and that more than covered the rest of the money needed to fully finance the trip.  They also gave each of the three student detectives their own Quark Pad as a reward for such great work.

Patti' Read:
This is a tiny book of about 4-5” x 3-4”.  It is easy reading of a spiritual nature.  It is a gathering of White Eagle’s sayings.  It is 96 pages long, divided into nine short chapters with his sayings listed in short to long paragraphs.

The sayings are chosen to give guidance and help with problems and experiences of daily life.  The chapters are divided by the qualities that a soul or person should strive for and given help in reaching.
The chapters are as follows:
The Master Soul Is Constant:
IS Gentle, Loving, Kind
Is Tolerant
Is Calm, Quiet, and Steady
Is Strong to Serve
Is Wise in Speech and Action
Is a Tower of Strength and Light
Bears No Resentment
Is Patient, Trusting in God’s Goodness and His Perfect Plan

I find the book’s sayings and wisdom very uplifting and helpful.  One can open the book to a certain chapter or just open it at random for a wise saying.  I enjoy the book very much.  The short paragraphs with the small size of the book make it easy and handy to use for the reader

My Read:
“Success, happiness, attitude, and effort are all choices. Your Choice….How people react to these moments in time is what separates the successful form the trapped.” –page 9 Personally, it all sounds so familiar and repetitive. It’s always our choice to be who we are. But it won’t hurt to frequently reflect and ask ourselves who we really are and/or who we really want to be as we are getting old. We might not be able to have access or control of the situations or the people surrounding us; what we do have is our interaction and reaction to them. Emotions came from the reactions. To be positive or otherwise, it’s up to you. Your Choice.
“Take control over what you can…Never give up improving the things that you can control.” –page 16 “The Indispensable person takes action and stops making excuses.” –page 20 As the authors cruelly point out in the book that there will be always someone prettier or smarter, wiser than we are. They also state “Whatever the past, going forward is a choice.” –page 17 Did you ever ask yourself and/or wonder why our parents sent us to schools? My mother told me that good education would allow me to meet other educated people and the ability to read books means I have more opportunities to improve myself. Do you know how big your horizon is? How huge the blue sky is in your eyes? Or did you ever ask yourself such questions?
At the end of the book the authors advise that whoever wants to become indispensable should be an eager learner, action-oriented and thankful (page121- page 126). It all makes sense, doesn’t it? Learning keeps a person alive. Being action-oriented invites focus and motivates a person to have a more meaningful life. And being thankful basically makes you a decent person.
To me, to be indispensable at the workplace is easy. Love what you do for a living.

Sherri's One Word for This Year-Health

Health

The word I chose to describe this year is health.  I’m looking forward to getting back to my old routine that I stopped after an injury.  This week was my final physical therapy, which set up an exercise routine and schedule.  I can now start slowly working towards getting back to my swimming exercises and gym exercises. It’s going to take a lot of discipline to get back to what I was doing before the injury.  I’m also going to get back to eating at a more regulated time schedule.  Keeping my blood sugar level low with food and timing. Eating a big meal for breakfast, a medium meal for lunch, a small meal for dinner and small snacks in between meals. I want to try to not eat or drink after 7:00 p.m. I hope to get better sleep as a result of the exercising.  I will continue to accentuate the positive, be challenged with the negative and let go of the small stuff.  Smiling more often and breathing when things get tough!!!

Title: Small Miracles of Love and Friendship
 Author(s):Yitta Halberstam and Judith Leventhal
Sherri's Read:
“Small Miracles of Friendship, Remarkable Coincidences of Warmth and Devotion “ is a compilation of short stories by authors Yitta Halberstam and Judith Leventhal.  Each true story is told with a comment at the end. The authors goal is to make their readers see how miracles are all around us. We just need to open our eyes and become aware of our surroundings and how crossing paths with others with positive energy can truly affect our journey on earth. Love and friendships can make a major influence on all of us, as long as we allow ourselves to be aware of all the positive gifts surrounding us. They also hope this will lead to people cherishing and celebrating the magic of human interaction that can bring more positive energy to the world. Too often humans ignore the positive and hold on to the negative experiences; we are challenged with in our life’s journey.  The stories are all about causes and effects that came out of an act of humane actions that changed the characters lives. Kindness is an act towards making this a better world. Humans need to become more humane then mankind will be closer to living in a peace filled world.

One of my favorites is a story contained three characters; one a pregnant Italian newly wed and two young brothers. The young boys spent a summer entertaining her while her husband was at work. The older brother was in charge of his three year old brother. During their visits with the mother to be, the younger brother stroked her belly. At the end of the summer they moved and didn’t get to see the baby. Years later the younger brother got very ill and needed a specialist to save his life. The doctor was the same baby he had stroked so many years before. There are other stories of uniting souls in marriage or in friendship. Some are of strangers changing lives or saving lives. There are stories of war and of peace. Most of the stories are about one person changing the journey of another person in a magical way as to leave the reader in awe of the mysteries in life that can’t be explained away. The little things that make life so magical.
